EGU27 regional hub in Perth

For the first time, EGU is trialling a new way of participating in the General Assembly in 2027 that reduces the need for long-distance travel: a regional hub. Located in Perth, Australia, and supported by national geoscience societies, the Perth Hub will give participants in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region the option to join an EGU General Assembly in an entirely new way.

How the EGU27 Perth Hub will work

The EGU27 Perth Hub will be an official regional extension of the EGU27 General Assembly, with opportunities for both on-site and virtual participation. The Perth Hub will host a full on-site programme, including a special scientific session, networking, and social events, combined with hybrid, facilitated sessions streamed from Vienna (when the time zones permit) and full virtual access to the EGU27 digital platform. Organized with the support of CSIRO, this event will run during the week of the EGU27 General Assembly, 4–9 April 2027.

Benefits of a regional hub

Travelling to international conferences has become increasingly difficult, especially long-distance travel, which also brings with it a heavy carbon cost. Whilst EGU has seen a steady increase in virtual participants, virtual participation is not an ideal solution for those in very different time zones. In addition, remote participants can find it challenging to protect time for an online conference alongside their usual work, especially those with caring responsibilities, disabilities, or other restrictions. This can prevent participants from taking the time to engage fully with the scientific ideas being shared or discuss them with their colleagues.

Networking is a key aspect of attending scientific conferences, and so far, online conferences have had limited success in our community due to their more restricted formats. The EGU27 Perth Hub will combine the benefits of reduced travel, dedicated time for an in-person event, and access to regional community networking opportunities with the full virtual programme of the EGU27 General Assembly to create a unique and valuable opportunity.

Abstract submission

Authors participating in the Perth Hub either on-site or virtually may submit an abstract to the EGU27 Perth Hub special session. This special session is exempt from the one-abstract rule. To participate, authors will need to submit their abstract via the dedicated Regional Hub abstract submission page.

Earth and environmental science in and from the Asia-Pacific region

The Asia-Pacific region encompasses an extraordinary diversity of geological, environmental, climatic, oceanographic, and ecological systems, while also facing many of the world’s most significant Earth and environmental sustainability challenges. This session welcomes contributions from across the full spectrum of disciplines represented at EGU, showcasing research conducted in, relevant to, or led from the Asia-Pacific region.

Hosted through the EGU27 Perth Hub and running throughout the week of the General Assembly, the session provides a dedicated opportunity for researchers from across the Asia-Pacific region to participate in person in this global conference. It aims both to highlight the breadth and excellence of geoscience research in the region and to strengthen engagement by enabling participation from researchers who may not be able to travel to Europe and/or have limited access to the online sessions in Vienna due to time zone differences.

Registration

Participants in the Perth Hub must register as virtual attendees of EGU27 using the usual registration portal. This virtual registration must be accompanied by a separate registration for the EGU27 Perth Hub, which will be available on the EGU27 website after selecting virtual registration.

The additional Perth Hub registration fee will be AUD 50 for all participants.

Funding and waivers

As the EGU27 Perth Hub is a trial event, travel and support waivers will not apply this year. However, participants can still apply for EGU27 virtual registration waivers or support via the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Participation Support Scheme.

Schedule

The EGU27 Perth Hub will operate a full-day schedule from 4 to 9 April 2027, prioritizing on-site activities in the morning (Australian Western Standard Time, AWST) and hybrid events in the afternoon (AWST). The schedule will use the following time blocks:

Participants can also use the informal, catered coffee and networking breaks to discuss their work and ideas.

The EGU27 Perth Hub will open at 09:00 AWST and close at 19:00 AWST each day, though participants will still be able to join the virtual sessions from Vienna in their own time.

The EGU27 Perth Hub will take place at the Australian Resources Research Centre (ARRC) in Kensington, Western Australia. The Perth Hub will occupy the ground and first floors at the front of the ARRC building. The ARRC is accessible by public transport using the Transperth bus service via Kent Street or Hayman Road. Parking is also available on-site for personal vehicles and bicycles.
